On June 30, 2022, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law the most ambitious single-use plastic reduction policy in the nation. California — which already has some of the most broad-reaching product stewardship and extended product responsibility (EPR) laws in the United States governing products ranging from paint, carpets, and mattresses to pharmaceutical waste – has now passed comprehensive legislation aimed at reducing plastic pollution. The Plastic Pollution Prevention and Packaging Producer Responsibility Act will greatly reduce single-use packaging or plastic single-use service ware. This will help protect the ocean by reducing plastic pollution at the source.
