We are very pleased to announce that Ocean Connect’s “Ocean Shot” submission – Ocean University: A Model Internship Program to Increase Diversity in Ocean Science – was accepted by the U.S. National Committee for the Ocean Decade. From 2021 to 2030, the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development focuses on scientific initiatives across the globe on the science needed to ensure sustainable use of ocean resources and long-term ocean health. Under the auspices of the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine, the U.S. National Committee for the Ocean Decade has issued a call for submission of “Ocean-Shots.” Ocean Shots are defined as an ambitious, transformational research concept that draws inspiration and expertise from multiple disciplines and fundamentally advances ocean science for sustainable development. Our Ocean-Shot aims to develop a model program for university-sponsored internships that will allow students from underrepresented backgrounds and communities to explore, pursue, and ultimately contribute to ocean science.
